Tutoring is one of the most popular strategies for helping students catch up in the wake of the pandemic. But cost, staffing, and scheduling challenges often make it hard for schools to get these programs off the ground. A sweeping $10 million research effort announced Thursday aims to tackle that problem by studying 31 different tutoring initiatives across the country this school year. The goal is to answer some of the biggest open questions about how schools can put successful tutoring programs in place for more students — and then figure out if they worked.

In a recent study, we report on the implementation of opt-in, on-demand tutoring in partnership with the Aspire Public Schools (a charter management organization, or CMO) in California. The CMO provided 7,000 middle and high school students with free, unlimited access to one-on-one chat-based tutoring during the spring 2021 semester. Students accessed the program from a mobile device and could request help from an available tutor in any core subject. The topic of each tutoring session was usually driven by student questions and the interaction between tutors and students were chat-based with help from a virtual whiteboard to facilitate joint work.

Remind currently provides k-12 math tutoring in alignment with state standards (Common Core or, i.e,. TEKS) and evidence based practice in the areas of math including pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, geometry, trig, calculus, stats, and test prep. Remind works with certified and retired teachers and relationships are our focus.

We have been in business for over 35 years providing schools, state agencies, and parents with education support. We provide 1:1 and small group virtual tutoring before, during, and after school hours. A student simply signs up on our inquiry form and we assign them a tutor who is highly qualified to teach in that subject area. All of our tutors are educators who can meet the child where they are at and help them recover from covid learning loss using HQIM. We use zoom, so it's easy for students to engage with tutors online. Parents set up a schedule that is convenient for them.

The Ignite! Reading program is typically implemented during the independent reading portion of a school’s literacy block or during a designated intervention period. Students receive 15 minutes per day of one-on-one instruction over Zoom from a highly-trained remote tutor. By leveraging Zoom we are able to both ensure that tutors are implementing the curriculum with fidelity and eliminate the traditional challenges of ensuring enough tutors are available at the time and place they are needed.

Masteryhour.org is a free, online tutoring program for K12 students, led by volunteers from colleges and universities, currently offered in English and Spanish. We use a mastery-based approach to ensure students advance at their own rate. All our tutors are trained in innovative teaching techniques including inquiry-based learning. anti-bias education, child-centered communication differentiating learning and cultivating a growth mindset. Volunteer professors and math teachers come to observe tutoring sessions and offer feedback and support to the student tutor volunteers.
