Describes an after-school tutoring program in which adult volunteers work, one-to-one, with low-achieving 2nd- and 3rd-grade readers. Specific attention is given to (1) the need for such a tutoring effort; (2) the design of the program, including how the tutoring was supervised; (3) an empirical test of the program's effectiveness; and (4) the generalizability of the tutoring concept to other educational settings. Results of a 2-yr study with 30 tutored children and 30 nontutored controls show that the program was successful in helping at-risk primary-grade children learn to read.
